Moorad Memorial Scholarship

In loving memory of Dr. Philip J. Moorad, Jr.

Dr. Philip J. Moorad, Jr., was an M.D., board certified in psychiatry and neurology.  He was a very gifted physician, who practiced psychiatry in San Antonio, Tx., for 42 years. Prior to that, he was an Associate Professor of Medicine at UTHSCSA, (San Antonio) from 1975 to 1980. He was the Medical Director for Afton Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, and Mission Vista Psychiatric Hospital, where he was named “Medical Director  of the Year” in 1994.

Dr. Moorad graduated from Princeton University in 1965, the Univ. of Rochester School of Medicine in 1969, and the Univ. of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, in 1973. He was chosen as Chief Resident for two of the three years of his  residency program, where he specialized in psychiatry and neurology. In addition, he was chosen by fellow physicians in San Antonio, as outstanding In his field of medicine, several years in a row, when he entered private practice in 1980.

Dr. Moorad was a highly intelligent, witty man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Michele, and the best father ever to his four kids and three grandkids. He was a man who lived life to the fullest and had many, varied  interests and hobbies…chief among them was his love of travel. He was a natural born explorer who believed that it was important to see different places and experience cultures outside your own. He made sure that his children understood the importance of that from an early age. Each of them has embraced that lesson in their own way.

He was a very special and very humble man who valued and loved his wife and family with all his heart.  We were all incredibly blessed to be a part of his life.
