Impact of COVID-19

Posted by Trudy Richards on 03/18/2020

Update as of 04/17/20:

Due to the cancellation of all remaining UIL contests this spring, the TILF has made the following changes to our application timeline and eligibility:

  • The TILF application submission deadline has been extended to May 20, 2020.
  • Only high school seniors who advanced to the state level in an eligible academic contest in previous years of their high school career OR in contests in the 2019-20 academic year that have already happened (Barbara Jordan and Latino History Essay Contests, BEST Robotics, Congressional Debate, Theatrical Design, Young Filmmakers' Festival) are eligible to apply.

The application can be found on our website.

Update as of 03/19/20:

UIL announced today that no contests will be held until after May 4, 2020. As a result, the deadline date for all undergraduate TILF scholarship applications will be pushed back accordingly should UIL events still take place this spring. Unfortunately, because dates for academic contests have not been finalized, we don't yet know what that deadline date will be.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this challenging time. Please refer back to this page, as updates will be posted here as they are available.

Update as of 03/18/20:

In consideration of closed schools across the state and postponed UIL contests, we know that many of our constituents may have concerns about how this pandemic might affect their ability to apply for the TILF scholarship program.

Currently, we are accepting applications from high school seniors who have already advanced to the state level in an academic contest in previous years of their high school career or in contests in the 2019-20 academic year that have already happened. Students may submit their applications on our website. Based on planned UIL contest dates, the application deadline is still May 8, 2020, with the understanding that this situation is very fluid, and this date may be changed.

In addition, we are accepting applications for the Elliott Graduate Scholarship. The deadline to apply for those awards has been extended to April 15, 2020.

As the situation with COVID–19 is extremely dynamic, the TILF continues to work with UIL staff to ensure that students have the best possible opportunity to apply to our program and will consider changes to eligibility criteria for 2020 competitiors and/or application deadlines as warranted.

Please refer to the UIL website for the most up-to-date information on academic contest dates.

Stay safe, wash your hands, and feel free to reach out via email if you have any questions. trichards@tilfoundation.org
